I am an avid reader. I think that reading is so important for so many different reasons; learning and expanding your knowledge can never be a bad thing. I love to learn new things, don’t get me wrong, a good enviro documentry is a fun way to learn some new stuff, but personally, I just love reading.
For the past few years, I have been consistently reading more environmentally focused books. In this post, I’m going to give you a list of just a few of my favourite environmental books. Just a heads up, you’ll probably notice David Suzuki’s name pop up quite a bit; I’m a bit of a fan to say the least.
1.The Optimistic Environmentalist: Progressing Toward a Greener Future – by: David R. Boyd
This novel is a must read, especially when you’re feeling discouraged about the environmental crisis. The Optimistic Environmentalist is all about the successes in our world in terms of the environment, endangered species, land and water, and so much more.
2. The Declaration of Interdependence: A Pledge to Planet Earth – by: Tara Cullis and David Suzuki
This short poem/ statement piece, was written in response to the UN Climate Summit is Rio in 1992. It’s just a really moving piece, written by environmental activists, who truly are passionate about this earth.
3. The Lorax – by: Dr. Suess
I know what you’re thinking, a children’s book, really? Yes a children’s book, that is quite enlightening in my opinion. We all know the Lorax, the story was even adapted into a movie, not once but twice. This story reveals the severity of the environmental crisis, and foreshadows what is occurring in reality… scary stuff…
4. Letters To My Grandchildren – by: David Suzuki
This novel is more of a personal response to what is occurring currently, and his fears and realizations for what his grandchildren will have to experience in their future.
This is just a short list to get you started, and a part 2 will be coming your way! A side note for this post, because we’re here talking about living a sustainable life; a way to reduce waste is to borrow books or buy used! The only reason I would buy a new book, would be to support the author, however if I do this, I buy an audio or digital copy. Anyways, have fun and I’d love to hear any of your recomendations for enviro books!
Thanks for reading, and as always, comments and questions are always welcome! 🙂
