How to Make Your Own Natural Toothpaste

I haven’t purchased toothpaste in almost 3 years now. Do I still brush my teeth? Of course! How do I manage this? I make it myself!

This is something I decided to do in order to reduce the amount of waste I was contributing to our planet. The ingredients are a lot simpler than you’d think and can be found at almost any store: coconut oil baking soda, and peppermint oil. You can add other things when you’ve experimented with it a bit, but those 3 are my base.

Making my own toothpaste has been one of my favourite DIY’s, and has proven to keep my mouth healthy and cavity free! That’s right, I haven’t had a cavity since I began making my own. I’m not saying that there is a direct correlation there, but y’know… I’m sure it’s one factor anyway.

Now I will warn you, when I first started using this toothpaste, it was WEIRD. I had been using conventional toothpaste for almost my entire life, before switching to natural toothpaste, and then to just making my own. With this recipe, you will notice your mouth will water (excessively) when you first start using it (at least mine did!). This is because of the baking soda and oil, but don’t you worry – as it becomes a part of your daily routine, your body will become accustomed to it.

So let’s get down to business! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/3 cup of baking soda
  • 1 cup of coconut oil
  • 15-20 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • optional: 15-20 drops of colloidal silver
  • optional: 1 tbsp of calcium

I use all 5 ingredients currently, in order to get a little extra benefits for my mouth. Colloidal silver is really good for fighting bacteria and virus’ in your body. Calcium is great for your strengthening your teeth.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If your coconut oil is in a solid state (like mine usually is), then you must melt it down to allow for easier mixing. Please please please make sure you don’t put it in the microwave, as this will kill a lot of the beneficial qualities it has! Make sure to liquefy it on the stovetop (it really doesn’t take as long as you think – and your mouth will thank you).

That’s it! All you have to do is mix the ingredients together in the container of your choice (I use smaller mason jars – as seen in the picture), and get brushin’.
